Political Awareness & Involvement

One of the first acts of public service occurred two months following the founding of Delta Sigma Theta on March 3, 1913.  Delta’s Founders marched in the historic Women's Suffrage March.  As effective and empowering as the march was it was imperative for Delta Sigma Theta to continue pushing legislative initiatives then AND now that affect the communities served by Delta on local, national and international levels.

The goal of the Political Awareness & Involvement Committee is to create programs that educate and empower citizens to get involved and advocate on all legislative levels.  GEAAC has been involved in numerous activities, some of which are identified below:

  • Training of its members as Deputy Registrars
  • Voter Registration, education and mobilization
  • Census 2010 community education
  • Implementation of Education Symposium that includes legislative leaders
  • Partnership with Lindop Elementary School to implement Anti-Bullying Program
  • Task Force on Empowering Youth for Change
  • Representation and participation in Delta Days at the Nation’s Capital
  • Representation and participation in Delta Days at the State Capital
  • Representation and participation in Delta Days at the United Nations
  • Letter writing campaigns

The following matters were addressed during the 2010-2011 sorority year:
  • Support of and partnership with NAACP
  • Funding for Black Farmers
  • Repeal of the upcoming tax cut set to expire in 2010
  • Full and adequate funding of public education
  • Funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's)

During the 50th National Convention held July 29, 2010 through August 5, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana, GEAAC received an Exemplary Program Award for its Social Action programs.
