The Physical and Mental Health Committee seeks to educate and facilitate lifestyle change for the physical, mental and spiritual well being of members of the sorority and the community at large.  The committee’s objectives are to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining good health habits and recognizing potential health related problems; to identify and partner with like-minded community organizations that address pertinent health issues and to develop and implement health-focused programs within the community.

Programs that GEAAC has implemented, sponsored or participated include:

  • Total Woman Healthy Weight Program which challenges chapters to a commitment to achieve healthier weights.  GEAAC has a friendly weight loss healthy lifestyle competition amongst its chapter members which includes friends and families.
  • United Negro College Fund and Multiple Sclerosis Society Walk-A-thons.
  • Community Empowerment Day is a one day event that includes testing, screening, resources and information on various health matters that include vision, blood pressure, diabetes, prostate cancer, breast cancer, preventive dental and HIV & AIDS.
  • Go Red for Women, a campaign through the American Heart Association that addresses heart disease, the #1 killer of women.  The program raises awareness of the risks and causes of heart disease and challenges women to know their risk for heart disease and to take action to reduce their personal risk. The program also provides the tools needed to lead a heart healthy life.  GEAAC has implemented several workshops that address heart disease and has also worked with its members to share information with their churches.
  • The Power to End Stroke, a program through the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association provides education and awareness about risk factors and signs of stroke.  Several members of GEAAC are Power to End Stroke Ambassadors.  GEAAC has secured thousands of pledge cards from people looking to join the movement to prevent and overcome stroke.
  • Just Us Girls Health and Wellness Conference, attended by more than 300 girls annually, includes several health related workshops geared towards teen girls.
  • GEAAC has partnered with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the African American Leadership Roundtable to co-sponsor an annual Breast Cancer Awareness and Educational Workshop.  Women of color are at higher risks of developing aggressive forms of breast cancer and often go without early detection services.  GEAAC’s goal is to educate about risks and resources, teach at-home techniques and encourage annual mammograms.

GEAAC has provided line dance classes for chapter members to get them active and moving.  The chapter works with the local blood bank to secure blood donors.  For a number of years, GEAAC has collected and donated thousands of pounds of soda tabs to the Ronald McDonald House.  Each year, GEAAC sings Christmas carols and provides toiletries and essentials to nursing home residents.

During the 45th Midwest Regional Conference held June 9-12, 2011 in Rosemont, Illinois GEAAC was recognized with a 3rd Place Award for its Physical & Mental Health programming, as well as our efforts in promoting Diabetes Awareness in the communities we service.
